dMAT for graduate students in India (APS verification process)

The digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test for graduate students. From 2026 on, the dMAT will be introduced as a new additional element into the APS documentation and verification process for Indian graduates wishing to apply for a graduate programme (Master level) in Germany.

Who needs to take the dMAT?

In its introductory phase in 2026, the new dMAT requirement will apply exclusively to applicants whose undergraduate degree is in one of the following fields:

  • Engineering
  • Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics
  • Business / Management

Applicants whose degree falls within one of these areas with the aim to take up studies in a graduate programme in Germany in summer semester 2027 or thereafter, are required to take dMAT with the General Academic Module as part of the APS documentation process.

Registration

How is the dMAT structured?

The dMAT consists of two modules: a core module and a subject module (General Academic Module).

The core module measures general cognitive and analytical skills. It consists of three subtests.

The subject module tests the ability to apply these cognitive and analytical skills to academic problem solving in a general academic module. The tasks consist of a combination of a typical problem and related questions. The dMAT therefore requires developed transfer and application skills rather than memorised factual knowledge.

How will the dMAT certificate be used?

The official dMAT certificate will be issued by g.a.s.t. The certificate has to be enclosed with the APS application documents. It will also be referenced on your APS certificate.
